Valmet M76FS Select-Fire Rifle (7.62x39mm) — Movie History — On FORM 3

Valmet M76FS Select-Fire Rifle (7.62x39mm Conversion) — Movie History — On FORM 3

The Valmet M76FS in a folding-stock configuration converted to select-fire is one of the rarer rifle variants in existence. Total U.S. imports of the semi-automatic civilian M76 series were strictly limited before the 1989 and 1994 import bans. The side-folding FS models represent a small fraction of the total number of Valmet rifles imported. This rarity makes them one of the more desirable Finnish AKs to collectors. (Reference 1, Reference 2)

This particular Valmet was imported by Centre Arms of NY in .223 caliber. It has since been rebarreled in the more desirable 7.62x39mm caliber and completely restored, undergoing thorough mechanical and function testing to ensure perfect operation prior to final assembly. To maintain its collector value, it remains completely unfired since the completion of the work.

This rifle is a side-folding tube-stock version of the Finnish Valmet M76 series. It is a high-quality, civilian version of the Finnish military RK 62 rifle, which is an improved AK-style design. The platform is famous for its great Finnish craftsmanship, featuring exceptional reliability and better accuracy than standard Soviet-bloc AKs. It stands out due to its compact folding stock and unique aperture sights. Because authentic Soviet weapons were almost impossible to get during the Cold War, this rifle's unique folding stock and full-auto capability made it the perfect movie stand-in for exotic, Eastern Bloc military firearms.

The Internet Movie Firearms Database (IMFDB) confirms this specific rifle model appeared in the movies and TV shows listed below. While we are still researching prop house logs to verify this specific serial number's exact screen history, we are highly confident it was one of two M76FS select-fire rifles originally used in the 1983 movie The Survivors by Robin Williams' character. It was later shared across affiliated productions as a rental, where it stood out due to its unique characteristics.
