Heckler & Koch MP5SD3 T&E Weapon – Serial S97383

This is believed to be one of the rarest Heckler & Koch machine guns known to exist. Research has identified only two surviving examples from this specific MP5SD3 Test & Evaluation (T&E) group, with Serial Number S97383 standing as the only factory-verified survivor confirmed by Heckler & Koch USA.

History

Between 1984 and 1985, Heckler & Koch imported a specialized batch of approximately 500 hand-built firearms from the S97xxx “Spezial” production series for U.S. government Test & Evaluation programs. This group included MP5A2, MP5A3, MP5K, MP5SD2, and MP5SD3 variants.

Of all models imported within this batch, the MP5SD3 was the rarest. Exactly 15 factory-configured MP5SD3s were imported for testing and evaluation. These firearms featured both German factory proof marks and Chantilly, Virginia import markings.

All 15 MP5SD3s were transferred to Quantico, Virginia, where they underwent evaluation by the FBI and United States Marine Corps. Five were assigned to destructive endurance testing involving extreme round counts, mud immersion, and freeze testing. Three were ultimately destroyed and two were used as parts donors, leaving ten functional examples.

In April 1986, prior to the Hughes Amendment, the remaining ten MP5SD3s were transferred from HK USA to the United States Government on ATF Form 5s. The weapons were routed through the Tampa, Florida special operations corridor centered around Mac Dill Air Force Base, where they participated in maritime counter-terror and special operations evaluations.

These trials focused on maritime close-quarters combat, ship-boarding operations, and signature-reduction testing. The MP5SD3's integral suppressor and retractable stock made it particularly suited for confined maritime environments and specialized insertion platforms.

Following completion of the testing programs, HK corporate policy called for the destruction of remaining T&E receivers. Most examples were destroyed, while a very small number escaped destruction and later entered the NFA registry as Pre-May Dealer Samples.

Because these firearms were originally transferred through government channels on ATF Form 5s, the ATF's NFA Branch later reclassified this specific group of agency-vetted pre-samples as fully transferable machine guns.

Research into the surviving firearms from this batch has identified only two original MP5SD3 examples outside government archives. Other firearms from the broader S97xxx program may have been converted into SD3 configurations later, but those would not qualify as original factory MP5SD3 trial guns from the Quantico and Tampa testing program.

Approximately 500 firearms were imported in this series. Of those, only 15 were factory-configured MP5SD3 models, making them the lowest-production variant within the entire T&E import group.

Transfer and Evaluation History

The National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record (NFRTR) documents the transfer of the remaining MP5SD3 trial weapons from HK USA to the United States Government in April 1986.

The firearms were utilized in maritime and counter-terror evaluation programs associated with Naval Special Warfare and Joint Special Operations Command elements operating through the Tampa and Mac Dill AFB corridor.

Physical examination of Serial S97383 shows comparatively minimal wear, consistent with a specimen or reference firearm rather than a heavily utilized trial weapon.
